Running 5 Miles a Week Pain-Free ... AT 71?! How Well-Trained Hips Can Heal Your Swollen Knees.
Remember the days when you did simple things without pain? How much further could you walk, without having to cut it short? How often do you hesitate to play with the grandkids because of hip pain?
When adults lose the ability to do things after an injury or a life-changing event, it rattles them to the core! Some try to fix their problem on YouTube, looking up ways to stretch and relieve pressure. But most of it isn’t helpful, unless you know how your body works in the first place.
There is hope, however, if you take the time to do it right and understand how the body works. You don't need prescriptions, or surgery. You can get back your strength and coordination ... WITHOUT PAIN.
This isn’t for everyone. If you're looking for a shortcut, a magic pill or a fad diet to get your life back, you won't find it here. The path to overcoming your pain involves healthy habits, hard work and commitment to doing things differently.
In a survey we ran about the most common issues people encounter as they age, EVERY PARTICIPANT listed knee or back problems. Here's the dirty little secret: BOTH symptoms come from your hips!
In my business, we have a saying about pain: "A criminal never cries out." People often experience referred pain from a specific injury. Referred pain that gets 'sent' elsewhere in the body, almost as if to trick you into thinking it's your back, instead of your hips. Unstable hips can cause sore knees, and tight hips cause backaches, and often there's a bit of both going on within the hips. (Sears) (Newport)
One of my clients, Bob, struggled with knee and hip pains from years of “wear and tear” from long distance running. The doctor told him he’d never run again. Bob was reluctant to go to a trainer, because he didn’t think they could help him.
But after hands-on training with Practical Nutrition & Fitness, Bob can now play with his grandchildren ... WITHOUT HIP PAIN! But don’t let me spoil the ending. Let’s listen to what Bob has to say . . . .
Bob Exceeds The Standard at 71 Years Old, Running 5 Miles Every Week Without Pain
You don’t hear that every day! In spite of the challenges of his hips and knees, Bob can now run 5 miles on a weekly basis AND increased his bench press in the gym! He recovered from the pinched nerve in his shoulder. His mobility is restored. He learned to MOVE DIFFERENTLY and BYPASS the pain, and got back things he loves to do.
Many people struggle to stay active in their 40s and beyond … but Bob is consistent every week, running and keeping fit when he’s 71.
Could YOU also get back some "pep in your step" by training with Practical Nutrition and Fitness? Let me show you how it works, through something we call "The O-P-T Model.”
Stand Up Straight. THEN Walk. THEN Run
When people experience injuries and trauma, they often turn to medication, YouTube videos, and physical coaches in hope of recovering. The problem is, they're still MOVING WRONG.
A lifetime of bad habits with how we move our bodies doesn't go away because of pills or training. That's why many of my clients felt condemned to spend their golden years in "pain management" mode.
Sooner or later, pain begins to challenge things you love to do, like swinging a golf club. And then it comes for basic things, like going for a walk or household chores. Pain often doesn't fix itself because the habits play a role, and if they don't change, the pain stays.
The solution to this is to STOP moving the way you always have! My clients learn to use their WHOLE BODY to move, to find balance and fight back against pain, instead of provoking it.
1. Dare To Be Coordinated
Bob’s left knee would swell and become uncomfortable after exercise. His right hip would be unbearable after doing squats, deadlifts, and lunges.
I told Bob to STOP his regular exercise routine, and we spent the first several weeks learning how to move, stretching and restoring the multiple, natural movements of his hips and pelvis. "Stretching is especially important when it comes to hip flexors and back pain." (Newport)
2. Adding Weight Never Felt So Good
As Bob continued, we focused on strengthening his coordination by adding weight to the new moves. It’s easy to OVERUSE certain muscles and "under-use" others, which is what caused Bob's problems to begin with. You shouldn't be surprised that overworked muscles get tired and complain, especially when there are so many other muscles sitting idle nearby.
Bob developed strength in muscles he wasn’t using, and rested his overused muscles. He eliminated the pain, and found balance. It was worth the restorative work, to see and hear the joy he shared when he got his groove back! He also told me, "Everywhere I go now, I hear your voice in my head, telling me how to move differently so I can do things pain-free."
3. Get Smart And Get Muscle
The third step for Bob was the best part. He started to climb the "ladder of strength" again! Because we'd done the homework on how to use ALL his muscles, he began to recover the EXPLOSIVE power he needs to push himself and perform in the gym.
Over the next three months, we increased the amount of weight he could lift, and the number of times he could lift it. Bob now understood how his body worked, and more importantly, he remembered what DIDN’T work! He found out just how far he could go ... and it was a LOT further than he'd ever thought!
Today, Bob no longer worries about pain, and he's not "managing" it either. He's in CONTROL over his life and circumstances. He's not afraid of a flight of stairs, or long runs with big hills.
What Are You Waiting For?
So ... why not YOU? You've worked hard and sacrificed to get where you are. Shouldn't you be able to ENJOY life at this stage? Could YOU be just a few right moves away from the same kind of FREEDOM and JOY Bob got back?
Would YOU like to get back some things that feel 'lost,' even if they're just basic things around the house?
If so, then let's get started. I'm opening up the vault for ANYONE who wants a practical, no-fluff method to living without pain as you age.
